Salas and Kautz were charged with first-degree murder for taking the lives of both Russell Forrest Brenner and Evelyn Brenner. 1971 Perm. Supp., C.R.S. 1963, 40-3-102. The criminal transaction also brought about charges of second-degree burglary (1971 Perm. Supp., C.R.S. 1963, 40-4-203), first-degree burglary (1971 Perm. Supp., C.R.S. 1963, 40-4-202), and theft (1971 Perm. Supp., C.R.S. 1963, 40-4-401). Salas plead not guilty and was convicted by a jury on all charges except second-degree burglary of the Mile High Reporting School. He was sentenced to life imprisonment, and the remaining sentences were imposed to run concurrently with the life sentence.
